Day 112 or Joy Colored Glasses

Today was my son's first last day of school before Christmas Holiday and what a day it was!

First, he got to wear his pajamas to school. Even here in Texas (or maybe because of it) kids are fascinated with the idea of being "snowed in" so the kindergarten had a snowed in party. They were allowed to bring a cuddly and a book. They watched movies and read books. All the while dressed in their favorite night clothes.

Better than that, however, was the party. It was winter carnival style set up in the cafeteria. Bean bags became snow balls. Shoe boxes were ice skates. And in the magic of a six year old's world, marshmallows become perfect snowmen. To see my little man amongst 120 other kindergartners going red-faced singing "Jingle Bells" at the top of his lungs, laughing as he wiped out, and all around being six and happy was the most joy-inducing experience.

I have heard it said that Christmas is for children. That may be so. But if it is so, I think that it is only to remind us to see the beauty and miracle of the holiday through the eyes of a child. In the book, The Wizard of Oz, the people of Oz wear green lensed glasses. They are told that they have to wear them to avoid being blinded by the glare of emerald city. Of course, the reality is that the reason the city looks green is because they are wearing the glasses. Well, if the man behind the curtain is giving out emerald-colored glasses my son is giving out joy-colored glasses and I am wearing them. Yep. I'm wearing the glasses of a six year old and I am loving it. Try a pair yourself. I highly recommend it.

I'm glad that adults in your school district are "creative" enough to have a snowed in day. My goodness, everything we had growing up is being taken away. Halloween is now a "Fall Festival" and that's if someone in the school district doesn't complain. Christmas is "Holiday Celebration", and again, that depends if someone doesn't complain. So thank goodness there are adults smart enough to know our kids are being robbed of all our traditions. It's all make believe and fun to celebrate.

Keep those joy colored glasses on before someone tries to steal/protest that too. Oh yeah, someone did, the Grinch and you see what love and happiness did to him = )

A snowed-in party! I so want to go to one of those. To get to go to school in your PJ's with a cuddly toy and a book - school was never like that in my day (doesn't that make me sound so old?)

So true!!! I have been enjoying this holiday season through my children's eyes. The simple joy of beautiful lights through Riley's eyes is amazing.

Ice skating in shoeboxes sounds like tons of fun!!!

I love it! You're so right, too. Holidays help us see the joy of being a kid, and I'm so grateful to re-discover daily events--joyfully--with my kiddos.

Everything through a child's eyes is a thrill. That's perhaps the best part of being a parent, seeing the world the way they do.

I still have a six year old in me that comes out whenever I let her play.

It was quite a party, wasn't it? I loved it, though the voice was a bit strained, it was GOOD. Really good. I loved being goofy w/ you and watching the kids go all out. The other moms never had a clue what they were in for with our class, did they? I loved that they were just so very busy w/ everything that they didn't get to treasure box and it just didn't matter. That they got to feel fun and special and crazy fun. Wonder if they will ask us to make it up again? I am betting YES.
