Day 267 or We Interrupt This Program...

I am interrupting my Lessons I Learned on a Mexican Cruise to ask this question. Do you DVR? Because I do. And it has gotten out of hand. Seriously.

I don't know how to watch live television anymore. I can't stand watching commercials. I literally get antsy.

But that's not the worst of it.

Here's the real trouble. I have so many shows recorded, scheduled to record, wanting to be recorded, sad that they are not recorded.. etc., etc., etc. What started out as a lovely little way to not miss my favorite shows has become part of my to-do list. I literally feel guilty when I start seeing the exclamation mark appear next to older shows. Oh No! I better ramp up my TV watching so that the four month old episode of "The Forgotten" won't get erased. I mean that show has zero chance of renewal so if I don't watch them, who will? Tell me that. Who will watch Christian Slater helm a group of mismatched heroes as they bring unidentified bodies home to their families? I will.

Unless, of course, there is a new recording competing with it. Like three "Modern Family"s, two "The Office"s, and about a dozen "Cougar Town"s. In other words, my DVR habit is OUT OF CONTROL!!! I feel the need to have a recording on at all times just so I don't have to erase my children's shows.

Yes. That's right. I am horrendous! I have hunted through the recordings for "Max and Ruby" (You know that Ruby will ignore Max until Max proves that he knew the answer all the time), "Go, Diego, Go" (He is going to save the animal, after all), or "Dora the Explorer" (She did it. She did it. She ALWAYS does it, is there any surprise left???) Just so I don't lose a movie I recorded in January. January 2009!!!!

Somebody help me. I am swimming in the cheap thrills of commercial-free, anytime TV Viewing. It seemed so innocent, at first. Now. I am on the metaphorical street corner stealing from my own children to fuel my habit.

Please stop me. Because. I. Can't. Stop. Myself.

The DVR can be your enemy, as you already know.

We only record certain shows and we only keep like 5 Thomas The Train and 5 Little Bears, since they are on all the time, there is no fear in deleting them.

I hope you know, if your DVR takes a dump, you will loose everything on it and have to get another one...sorry didn't mean to scare you..but that is what happened to us and it was a real eye-opener. So now we only record certain stuff...and try not to overload... But I hear you, it can get out of hand and quick.

Good Luck!

I don't know how I ever survived life without DVR! I have rules though. Anything I record for myself (i.e. not for the kids to watch over and over and over) has to be watched either that week or the week after or it gets deleted. Some shows I will allow three weeks and then mandate a marathon catch up session or...it gets deleted. The year my son was born (2008) I vowed to keep up with Lost using DVR but knew I'd lose the battle, so one season behind became two and then I gave up even thinking I'd ever get caught up. I'm disappointed I can't enjoy the excitement of the series end and have accepted the fact if I ever really want to know what happened, I'll have to buy the DVD box set and watch it when the kids hit college in, oh 10 years from now.

I don't have a DVR and I'm kind of glad because I would become a slave to it. It would feel like homework.

Comin over from lady bloggers tea part. I read your intro and was hooked. I'm 37 and can so relate to what you said. I also get the whole dvr thing. I've deleted most off my list now cause i just couldn't keep up. I was thinking of writing about this too. I ONLY watch Modern Family now. Sad. Anyhow, nice meeting yo- I'm your newest follower.

I don't know what we did before our DVR. We are DVR addicts here too. We've though about canceling our satellite and running a line from the computer to the tv to just watch shows online to cut down on bills, but then we realized we'd be forced to watch commercials. Ugh!

DVR is one of the greatest inventions ever!

Well at least it's safer than newspaper hoarding since those unwatched shows can't tip over and physically bury you.

I am very bad at giving advices on TV matters, as TV for me is like garlic for Edward Cullen!

You clearly have an issue and drastic action is needed. I suggest that you ban all TV viewing and recoding for your children going forward. Someone is going to need to sacrifice in order to make room on the DVR, and it might as well be them.

hmmm...I think we might be twins.

I'm horrible about recording stuff. And it drives my husband crazy when he's trying to watch something on the weekend and all of a sudden the channel changes to some cooking for decorating show that I've scheduled to record.

What did I do before the DVR?

I am laughing so hard because I am exactly like that!!! I have so many things DVR'd and I only watch like half of them. I also DVR Dr. Phil and Oprah and I'll go through them and watch half of a show to see if it's interesting before deleting it. I can spend whole afternoons this way!
